Attends The Alma Awards

Benjamin Bratt

Among the many celebrities including Antonio Banderas, Jimmy Smits, Charo, Rita Moreno and Gloria Estephan... The Hispanic Network Magazine was able to congratulate these celebrities and thank them for their contributions and participation in NCLR and The Hispanic Network Magazine. The National Council of Laraza (NCLR), the nation's largest Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Awards honors the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans in television programs, films, and music videos that provide positive and accurate portrayals of Latinos. The ALMA Awards was taped at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, Pasadena, California, on Sunday, April 11, 1999 and will air on ABC on Thursday, June 3, 1999.

The Show, the only two-hour themed primetime special produced on any of the four major English-language networks, was named "ALMA" (Spanish for "spirit" or "soul") in an effort to reflect the spirit as well as the scope of the awards program. The ALMA Awards are an entertainment special, but they are also an opportunity for the Latino community to celebrate its achievements, and a tool to educate others about the contributions of Hispanic Americans to this nation.

Working with NCLR, the Center for Media and Public Affairs conducted research to determine the quality of representation that Hispanic Americans receive in the mass media. This research revealed that Hispanics, as of the mid-1900's, were less visible in the entertainment industry than they were in the 1950's. Further, the research showed that Hispanics were often portrayed negatively and in ways that did not reflect the broad range of the Hispanic experience in the United States.

The ALMA Awards, were created to counter these negative representations by shining the spotlight on those individuals responsible for the television programs and films that accurately reflect the Hispanic American experience. The goal is to mix entertainment with mission by showcasing outstanding artists and talented individuals, while underscoring the need to change current media perceptions and representations of Hispanic Americans.

The ALMA Awards, however, represent just one part of NCLR's overall media advocacy efforts. These efforts include a combination of increased research and policy analysis, an aggressive media advocacy and public education campaign, and the promotion of accurate and sensitive Latino media portrayals and coverage. Through these combined efforts, NCLR hopes to effect fundamental changes in public perceptions of the Hispanic community in the United States.
