Which Federal Jobs Are the Best?

The federal government is projecting a 10 percent increase in employment through 2018. These jobs offer good salaries, great benefits, job security and flexible work schedules in locations across the country. But which ones are best?  In Laurence Shatkin’s new book, 150 Best Federal Jobs, he reveals which occupations provide the best combination of three economic factors: earnings, job growth and job openings. 

Here are the five jobs that topped Shatkin’s list:

Average Annual Earnings: $101,770
Percent Growth: 41.5 percent

Air Traffic Controllers
Average Annual Earnings: $113,840
Percent Growth: 10.7 percent

Detectives and Criminal Investigators
Average Annual Earnings: $73,320
Percent Growth: 29.8 percent

Lawyers
Average Annual Earnings: $131,410
Percent Growth: 8.4 percent
Annual Openings: 960
Computer and Information

Research Scientists
Average Annual Earnings: $99,730
Percent Growth: 19.5 percent
