How to Interview with an Executive

Congrats! At this point in the interviewing process,  you have probably made it through several rounds of interviews with the same company.interview tips The roles of those that have interviewed you up to this point likely include human resources recruiters, department managers and potential future co-workers.

You have now been asked to interview with a top executive at the company. This stage of interviewing is different than the rest. What is different about this stage? The executive has likely already received word that you are technically qualified for the position. He/she is now looking to determine if you are the fit for the organization as a whole. Some things an executive would look for include:
-Are you the type of employee that the company would want representing the organization?
-Are your values in line with company culture?
-Are you passionate about the organization and not just the job?
What is important at this stage is to focus on your knowledge and interest in the company as well as the industry. Demonstrate that you have done your research and why you are interested in this company specifically. Do not get too technical, unless prompted to do so, regarding your ability to handle the minutia of the position. As the executive will have a general understanding of what you will be doing  on a day to day basis on the job, he/she is likely to lose interest in discussing minutiae.

Allow the executive to take the lead during the interview. In a best case scenario, the executive interview is just a "rubber stamp". If all seems fine and there are no glaring question marks that come up at this stage, the executive will most likely approve the hire. Depending on your role, you may not be interacting with this executive on a day to day basis. By talking too much, you can sell yourself out of a job. Try to mirror the traits of other employees you have met at the company. Follow the lead of the interviewer and explain all of the positive things you have learned about the organization during the earlier stages of the process. You are almost at the finish line- keep pushing!
